Crazy person..... How would making mining less repetitive and boring lessen the demand for bots? That's crazy talk.
:-P
People walk straight past this fact everyday....... Boring repetitive tasks, are best handled by automation. Simple as that.

After seeing just how much people enjoy the most boring aspects of this game I've come up with a new game idea.
1800's Factory Worker
Set at the dawn of the industrial age you play a 12yo London born worker, struggling with the day to day existence of slum life you get yourself a great job working in a cotton mill as a runner. Constantly in danger of losing fingers or decapitation by the machinery in this stunningly rendered 3D spectacular world.
* Photo-realistic 3D rendering of an authentic 1800s cotton mill. * Hours of fun running back and forth in the exact same pattern. * Integrated breaks once every 16 hours. * Super-realistic Task-Master peripheral complete with cane and whip. * Much Much More!!!
It will sell like hotcakes!

I watched a friends kid play Runescape and after some mild exposure to the grinding of seeds in other MMOs, such as fishing, cutting timber etc.
When I finally got Eve my first impression was "this is a space MMO, it will be different, because humans have higher tech and don't do mindless **** anymore"..... So I expected some kind of futurist mining system where I could configure the ships to do their job. So I fly to a belt, hmmm a bunch of individual objects, I have to lock them individually, and my laser stops every so often......... OMG THIS IS LAME!!!!
That was my first impression on my second day playing..... Hasn't really changed after doing many countless hours of mining.
edit: Grindcore, that really is the smart solution. People should be complaining they don't have decent scripting tools in-game to compete with botters.
